Clive and I felt very honoured to be asked to manufacture this incredible design for the Arts Council.

This is not a bouncy castle, it is a bespoke inflatable ” Mining Couture ” was commissioned from Barber Swindells’ £20k Arts Council commission at Snibston Discovery Museum, as part of the Transform programme. Gaining their creative inspiration from the Snibston site, the colliery and museum collection, Barber Swindells explored the relationship between coal mining and fashion. Mining Couture is multi-narrative as it evokes and references miner’s lives and history within an art and fashion context. In the relationship between coal mining and fashion there is no linearity, though both industries share the term seam depth is sought through shifting boundaries between the two realms.

Housed in the museum Barber Swindells have produced an inflatable sculpture entitled ‘Ventilation Dress’. ‘Ventilation Dress’ is proportionally modeled on one of Snibston’s booster fans and patterned in a 1976 floral dress, which once belonged to a National Coal Queen. Technology often draws inspiration from nature and in this case the form and shape of the booster fan is not unlike a human lung, the actual booster fan can be seen as part of the ‘miners tour’. In ‘Ventilation Dress’ Barber Swindells conceptualise fresh air as a vital force for all life and how the flow of air may be interpreted in relation to all aspects of a miner’s life, above and below ground. Nearby ‘Ventilation Dress’ is a video show-reel, which features different aspects of the Mining Couture commission.

As part of the commission Barber Swindells installed a portakabin as a notional working studio in the centre of Snibston. For the opening event the portakabin is perceived as a journal, monologue and sketchbook to announce the forthcoming Mining Couture book, which will be published by Black Dog Publishers in September 2012. Set against a rich back-story of the coal mining industry the portakabin demonstrates the full potential on the interrelationship between artist concept and site specificity. Inside the portakabin the work includes natural dyes sourced from Snibston site to colour various fabrics to produce a series of dresses inspired by pit-brow lasses as well as artist’s drawings and photographs.

The competition has been improved and has been made very easy to enter.

All you need to do is email us your name, business name and telephone number and you will be put into a hat.
The winner will be picked out by a neutral third party.

The winner will receive :

1. A FREE Ice Pool Ball Pond. ( no balls supplied, does come with blower and stakes ). RRP. £750 + vat
2. A champagne reception on Arrival to KLC Castles ( when collecting your prize )
3. A tour of KLC Castles factory.
4. “A day in the life ” of KLC Castles. You can help make an inflatable or just watch, its up to you.
5. An all expenses paid lunch for one person

We know that there are some manufacturers out there who are talking about us behind our back. We won’t mention any names.

We are now printing our art work on the inflatables.

This is NO secret and we invite people to come and see us at the factory or wait for the INPAS show in March 2012. 

We had one of the best hand painted artworks in the industry.

We would never change it to be like the chinese imported printed artworks that you get. Which looked faded and blurry.

This would not make any sense.

We have been looking into printing for three years now and up until this year the printing machines haven’t been good enough. also the sealing process has not been good enough either.

We have the latest technology to create our artwork. We have been researching this area of the business for years now.

There is no way we would change our products to fall behind the rest of the industry.

We feel and we have had many comments and new customers that our artwork is still the best in the industry.

 We are still using the artwork designs on our website at the moment but, we have many new designs to come and they will be here in 2012.

 we are extremely busy at the moment with orders and we are booked up until the end of next february 2012.

Our company is expanding rapidly, we are very excited and can’t wait for you all to view our products.
